Week 01/03/2020-07/03/2020: Tension at the Greek-Turkish borders

Greek-Turkish borders

In an unprecedented move, the Turkish government decided to open its border and to facilitate the movement of immigrants and refugees towards EU. This caused Athens’ strong reaction that declared the decision as a hybrid attack against Greece and pledged not to allow the entrance to anyone. As a result, we had a very tensed week in the Greek-Turkish borders during which groups of immigrants and refugees facilitated by the Turkish authorities, were attempting to enter Greece while, the Greek police forces were trying to prevent it. The only victims in this tug-of-war between the EU, that denies the acceptance of any new immigrants, and Turkey, that exploit them in order to gain other goals, are Greece and the immigrants that have found themselves stacked at the borders in a precarious situation.
